Private GP appointments: What to expect for your first visit
September 23, 2024
Private GP appointments offer a convenient alternative to traditional NHS consultations. If you’re new to private healthcare, the process may seem unfamiliar. Here’s what happens at a private GP appointment before, during, and after your first visit.
1. Booking your appointment
Instead of waiting in a phone queue, you can book an appointment online. You’ll first create an account and thereafter, you can just log in to schedule and manage your bookings. An online form will let you tell us about your health concerns. This helps our doctors prepare for your visit and give you a more in-depth consultation.
You’ll pay for your appointment securely online when you book and receive an instant confirmation by email with your appointment details. If you prefer, you can book by phone. Just call 01869 227722.
Your Magna Private Healthcare first visit
Upon arrival at our Bicester facility, check in with the receptionist. A GP or nurse will then call your name and escort you to a private consultation room. Your appointment will last 30 minutes or longer (depending on what you booked). This will give you enough time to relax and discuss your health concerns. Afterwards, we’ll email you a letter summarising your consultation. Share this with your NHS GP so that your records are kept up to date.
2. The consultation process
Private GP appointments typically last longer than NHS consultations. During your appointment, your doctor will take the time to understand your specific health concerns and provide tailored advice. You may undergo basic checks such as blood pressure, weight, and possibly blood tests, depending on your needs.
Preparing for your appointment
Identify your concerns. Before your private healthcare first visit, think about the specific health issues you want to discuss.
- Prepare a list of relevant medical history, medications you’re taking, and symptoms that you’re experiencing.
- Write down any questions you have for your doctor. The environment is usually relaxed and professional, with the focus on personalised care. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – your doctor is here to help.
By being prepared with a clear list of your concerns and questions, you can ensure that your first visit is productive and sets the stage for an ongoing relationship with your GP.
3. Following on from your appointment
Here’s what you can generally expect after a GP appointment:
- Diagnosis: Your GP may have diagnosed your condition or at least narrowed down the possibilities.
- Treatment plan: If a diagnosis was made, your doctor will likely outline a treatment plan. This could involve medication, lifestyle changes, referrals to specialists, or other interventions.
- Follow-up: Your doctor might schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your progress, adjust your treatment, or discuss any new symptoms.
- Prescriptions: If necessary, the doctor will provide you with a prescription for any medications you need.
- Referrals: If your condition requires specialised care, you may be referred to a specialist.
It’s important to:
- Follow your GP’s instructions: This includes taking any prescribed medication as directed and making any recommended lifestyle changes.
- Contact your GP if you have any concerns or questions. Don’t hesitate to reach out if your condition worsens or if you have any new symptoms.
